When I read these words by Rita Rudner, I couldn't help but think of Mathilde in ‘The Necklace’; if she only were as wise!
“My husband gave me a necklace. It's fake. I requested fake. Maybe I'm paranoid, but in this day and age, I don't want something around my neck that's worth more than my head.”

Unfortunately I must say that Mathilde will never be as wise as the woman who got the fake necklace. The problem with most women is that they want the best of everything and it is very rare to find a woman who would like the least anyone can get...

Does she means that her head is worthless?

In my opinion, its not about how much the price is, its about how you value the things you have. Having a very worthty things is good, specially when the one who give it to you is the one you love.

I really like and admire this lady's opinion, her wisdom is actually unusual nowadays since people have become very materialistic. Moreover, Mathilde is a type of person who isn't self-confident AT ALL. She believes that her beauty needs a compliment (richness and high class), which doesn't make sense. If she was a normal content person she would have thanked God for the beauty she has. Therefore, I believe that she deserves such destiny and that her dissatisfaction and greed, was the major reason of her ending up like this.

I agree with u guys...and yes, Mathlide will never be as wise as this woman...she wants to wear anything that she even doesn’t deserve...this shows us her dissatisfaction and envy....she's from a middle class and she wants to wear something that she can't have or get…

Why did she even request a fake necklace from her husband? That’s stupid.

If only Mathilde was as smart as this woman she wouldn't end up poor and working off her debt. However, Mathilde did learn her lesson from being poor and having to work.

Indeed she had a hard lesson to learn from, but did she learn her lesson? For after all the years of dearth and distress still “sometimes, she would sit near the window and think of that long-ago evening when, at the dance, she had been so beautiful and admired.”

It is really important to know who you are and what you really want from life , not just to blindly conform to the materialistic part of society that cares about looks and nothing but looks.Mathilde failed in in realizing this; and thus, failed in achieving happiness !

What Mrs. Amani said is very true..Mathilde, however, seems like a confused person that only wants beauty and money from life..The problem here is that in that era of time, women had no status. Men at that time had a very hard time just getting money as a person of the middle social class..Mathilde was supposed to think before she kept day dreaming. Her day dreaming and not accepting reality is what caused her misery in her life..

Mathilde is materialistic; she was concerned about outer beauty rather than inner beauty. She cared about her appearance, beauty, how could she wears the best and what can her husband afford for her. She didn't recognize her husband's kindness, love, and care and that he is trying to do whatever he can to make her happy.

That shows that she isnt materialistic at all because she didnt requiset a real diamond necklace, it also indicates taht she is wise and resonable.
